Many of you know that I play with colour. I usually do it with dyes of various sorts, but I thought I would introduce you to a site where you can do it online. COLOURLOVERS.COM is an excellent place to try various colour combinations and it is so easy to see if adjustments need to be made. Let’s see the sort of thing that you can do.
Firstly, you can create a new colour. Here’s one I created with a new identity, specifically for this blog post.
So, I’ve created a colour. What else can I do? Well, I can search for inspiration. Just a click away is a whole range of photographs (in this case 396 pages) each of which contain the above colour. By searching through I can find just the right combination of colours to create an original piece of artwork, or inspire a new thread colourway.
I can also investigate the colour. If I move to right or left I can create a subtle series
If you look at the site, you will see that I actually created 3 more colours during this process, I’ve named them appropriately for this article.
Returning to the colour I can move up or down to create another subtle palette. This tells me a lot about depth of colour.
Once again I created new colours (this doesn’t always happen)
Let’s face it, though, playing with a single colour isn’t half as exciting as playing with a whole rainbow, and you can do that too.
Once again I have returned to the original colour as my starting point. To the right of the colour box is a rainbow strip. Moving up and down this strip will give me completely different combinations
Amazingly, I created more colours. They are all prefixed with Chittle, so if you investigate the site you will see how many new ones can be created in a very short time.
Previously used colours become quite different when contrasts are added. For instance
But you can have much more fun than than that, you can even colour patterns, or make your own!
If you really like the result (you can also design your own pattern) there is a link so that you can even buy fabric made to your specifications.
Go on, have some fun. Let me know here if you use any of the new colours.
