I remember .. 4 ..

Is there a moment in your life that made an unexpectedly enormous impression? I can remember one from when I was 7 years old.

At the time my father worked for our national tv company. On one occasion during school holidays he unexpectedly had to go to work briefly, and I was able to go with him. This was in the days long before colour hit our screens and while he wax working in studio.

Serialising Charles Dickens books was the flavour of the era, and an episode of David Copperfield was in the process of being rehearsed. The building was teeming with actors, all scruffily dressed in paint daubed sacking which was suited to the episode. Wickipedia talks about here

If you view the cast list you may recognise some of the names, but it was none of these that created a lasting impression, but the studio floor. Using nothing more than black paint and a garden brush the scene of a bleak country road was magically appearing in front of my eyes.

Years later the use of household objects to create marks for artwork became second nature, but that image of black paint on studio floor is still really vivid.

Television had moved on in leaps and bounds since then. Two weeks ago our road was in front of the camera and it was shown on tv last night. At the moment you can view the whole programme HERE We are only a very small item within it. I’m not sure how long the link will be available.
