You can’t

‘Oh yes you can’, I can hear you say, but read on, you might just agree with me. I’m going to make a statement – with no argument – and comments are more than welcome, in fact I’d love to hear what you think. So….

……

You can’t judge someone else’s actions by your own standards.

(That doesn’t mean you have to agree with their actions, by the way, just that you can’t JUDGE them)

  1. Yes; no. There are some actions that are so far beyond my moral boundaries that I would have no qualms about judging them. For instance, if you decided to go around kidnapping people and sacrificing them by cutting their hearts out, I might suspect you were insane, but I wouldn’t hesitate to say you should be stopped as fast as possible. Or, moving into our unfortunately current world, I remember a recent news story about parents (in Pakistan, if I remember correctly) who murdered their daughter by dousing her with acid because they thought she had glanced at a boy. That’s evil. I don’t care what notions of family honor you think you’re defending; torturing your own child to death is evil, and by acting like that you have destroyed your family honor.

On the other hand, most of the things people might do fall into the categories of “not to my taste, but whatever” or “well, you have to know the backstory” or “it’s the best among the available choices.” Or the category of “it’s reasonable when I do that but not when you do.”

  2. We all do judge other’s actions, so I have a language usage problem with your statement. Are you saying that we SHOULDN’T judge others by our own standards? And I’d like to know what you mean by “judge.” Is this different from discernment? Does it involve approval or condemnation or punishment? Is this only in a negative sense, or are we not supposed to judge another’s actions when we agree with them?

  3. I agree! It is not fair, especially in diverse societies. That is the reason the Bible says, ““Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye” (Matthew 7:1-5).

  4. I think it’s impossible not to judge based on so many factors, morality, crime, genetics, evolution, environment, religion, sexuality..the key is to keep your eyes wide open mouth shut !!
